The Thompson-Nicola Regional District has ordered the evacuation of 102 properties in the Agate area, west of Lower Nicola and south of Spences Bridge, due to the Lytton Creek wildfire.
A further six properties on Torgensen Road were also ordered to evacuate a couple of hours later, because of the same fire.
Highway 8 has also been closed in both directions between Canford and the Clapperton Ranch, with an update expected tomorrow, August 15, at 3 p.m. Details on that closure are here.
People are being told to stay with friends or family, if possible, and to register with Emergency Support Services, even if they do not need support.
Evacuees are being told to report to the McArthur Island reception centre in Kamloops, if they cannot stay with friends or family.
“If you can stay with family friends and require Emergency Support Services (like grocery vouchers, etc.), register online and complete the registration process by visiting the nearest reception centre,” the TNRD said.
The Lytton Creek wildfire, which destroyed the village of Lytton on June 30, has been seeing increased activity today, with more expected tomorrow.
“Strong winds may move fires and evacuation orders and alerts will be recommended if required,” the BC Wildfire Service said, in an statement. “Smoke is creating challenging conditions for aerial suppression and observation on the southeast flank of the fire.”
The fire, burning out of control at an estimated 54,395 hectares – or 543 square kilometres – is most active in the Manning Creek, Nuaitch Creek, and Mimenuh Mountain areas.
