The community of Barriere is no longer on evacuation alert.
Speaking on the NL Moring News, mayor Ward Stamer says the evacuation alert was rescinded as of 8 a.m. thanks to favourable weather that helped fight the nearby Sparks Lake fire.
The alert had been issued Monday morning, after the Sparks Lake fire moved to the northeast over the weekend, being fuelled by gusting winds.
“The fire has been suppressed quite a bit from just the weather itself and the cooler nights. So we had meetings last night with the (BC Wildfire Service) and the TNRD, and we’ve decided in consultation with council and staff that we were going to rescind the alert this morning.”
Stamer says the TNRD is still going to keep the alert in place on the west side of the North Thompson River in Area O, to make sure people are aware that if something does change, they will be in harms way a little quicker than those in Barriere.
At time of posting, the alert remains in place for 231 rural properties outside of Barriere, north to Darfield and south the McLure. A list of addresses affected within the TNRD can be found here.
